This course explores the basics of modern calligraphy from the ground up. You'll learn about pointed pen calligraphy tools, how to construct letterforms, the basics of composition and design, and a history of the craft.

In this course, you'll also gain insight of the next steps you'll need to take to progress your skill set, including an introduction to intermediate concepts.



After completing this course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of pointed pen calligraphy tools
  • Show confidence with pen pressure and release techniques
  • Demonstrate use of visual hierarchies in message building within a composition
  • Present a working knowledge of the modernized copperplate alphabet along with non-traditional visual techniques


Each student will be provided a introductory calligraphy kit curated by Molly Jacques.

*This class is beginner level. Students with no previous knowledge are more than welcome (and encouraged!) to sign up. If you are intermediate level, you're welcome too! That being said, I'd highly recommend taking my Lettering & Digital Techniques course if you're at intermediate level and are looking for a course to really progress your skills. This class can 100% be applied to calligraphy techniques.
